July 30, 2009, Wood's Hole, MA

We finally sailed out of Narragansett Bay, R.I. and headed out to the ocean. We have been having continuous weather systems coming through every other day and kept on the bay rather than venturing out to the islands south of Rhode Island. Yesterday we crept out of the bay with fog and visibility of a mile so we headed out and sailed along the foggy coast to Wood's Hole. We are in a lovely anchorage with several other sail boats and a luxurious yacht.

During the past week in between weather systems lots of boats were capturing the wind and getting a few hours of sailing on the bay.

We saw some 12 meter yachts racing on the bay.

We were sailing behind this boat which looked like a Chinese Junk

Small ferry boat transporting passangers between the islands where we a presently anchored.

Last night a large yacht anchored not far from our boat. Woods Hole is in the background.

15 July 2009 - Jamestown, RI

We arrived at Dutch Island Harbor by Jamestown, RI in the West Passage to Narragansett Bay about 1100 PM in the evening after a long run up Long Island Sound and Block Island Sound.
When we got up in there was a small schooner and a Coast Guard vessel in the harbor with us. We had just seen the outlines of the boats when we arrived in the dark.

Here is the Newport Bridge

We made our annual trek across the Bay on a water taxi to visit Newport.

Our return trip to Jamestown.

Sandy Hook, New Jersey 11 July 2009

We are still here at Sandy Hook. Seems like everytime we have to lay over for a variety of reasons for a few days. Logistically it is a good spot. We have been at anchor since we arrived Monday.

We hope to get moving again toward New England tomorrow, Sunday, or the next travelling up to New York City's East River and then east through Long Island Sound.

Atlantic Highlands, NJ actually has highlands. Here in the harbor we are on the north side and the east side faces the Atlantic and looks like a series of bluffs you see on the Mississippi river.

Gordon on shore overlooking the Marina here.

Jabberwocky on her mooring in the harbor. There is some bad weather coming through tonight so we got a mooring for more protection. They have a nice launch service to get us back and forth to the dock.

July 7, 2009 Sandy Hook, N. J.

We had a 48 hour run from the Chesapeake to Sandy Hook, N.J. We are anchored at Atlantic Highlands with several other boats. We had good winds for sailing so we sailed all the way except for the last 8 hours when the wind shifted to the north with choppy seas we turned on the engine to finish the Jersey coast and round Sandy Hook. On the night of the 4th we were treated to fire work displays along the coastline. At 8 A.M. when we arrived at Sandy Hook there were many boats anchored here but by the evening many had left. One of the boats at anchor had a French Flag and we watched Home Land Security boat check them out. We will be at Atlantic Highlands for a few days. I've included some of the pictures we took while we were in Washington, D.C.

While we were in Washington ,D.C. we explored the American Indian Museum. The building is a perfect setting for the exhibits of American Indian displays from Indian Cultures from all of the Americas- South American, Central America and North America.

A favorite stop is the American History Museum which was closed last year.

July 3, 2009 Hampton, VA

We spent Sunday June 28 and Monday June 29 visiting some of the Smithsonian Museums. First we went to the Archives to see the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights as well as several other exhibits. Then off to see the Museum of American History which had been closed for renovation when we were here last year. The following day we saw a new museum the American Indian Museum-the building looks like the cliffs of the Pueblo Indians with a modern architect twist. We stopped at the National Art Museum to see a visiting exhibit of ornate Spanish Armour from Charles V in the 1500s. The mall had a Caribbean Folk Festival and down the street was a Barbecue Grill Off an annual charity event-so we packed in a lot during the two days in Washington, DC. We then headed back down the Potomac and then south on the Chesapeake Bay. Today we will be heading out to the Atlantic and will follow the coast to Sandy Hook, N. J. which will be about a 48 hour run.
