September 30, 2008 Annapolis, MD

We are anchored in a beautiful cove (Weems Creek) a mile and a half from downtown Annapolis. Yesterday we took our dingy for a "ride" to the city harbor and later we walked around the town and the Naval Academy. It was a beautiful day after the last few days of rain. On Sunday the 21 of September we left Sandy Hook ,New Jersey (Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club Marina) and had a 35 hour run from Sandy Hook ,New Jersey down the Atlantic coast and then up the Delaware Bay and through the C&D Canal. We stayed overnight in a marina on the canal and then headed for a small anchorage just off the canal waiting for a weather window to continue down the Chesapeake Bay. We had a rainy 8 hour sail to Annapolis but we saw many sail boats and cruisers headed south- I am sure they were anxious like us to head south. Annapolis is just a delightful town with the small shops in historical homes the beautiful State House and of course the beautiful Naval Academy. The town is getting ready for the annual sail and power boat show so there is a lot of activity in the harbor and the tourist shops.

September 20, 2008 Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey

Waiting for the winds and seas to calm down so we can head south to the Delaware Bay. Sunday is a window for us to move south. We took these pictures along Long Island Sound and the East River a few days ago. This is the sundrise over Long Island Sound. It just does not get any better than seeing mother nature in her finest. One of the light houses we past along Long Island Sound. These magestic bridges along the East River are a sight to see!

Atlantic Highlands, NJ 17 September 2008

We spent Tuesday in Osterbay, New York. It was a very beautiful and quiet anchorage. The mansions on the clifts were the suburban homes of the eastern shore of Long Island Sound. On Wednesday morning we left the harbor at 7 a.m and headed down the east shore and east river of Long Island then passed New York City-with the great sky line including the Empire State Building, the Chrystler Building, the United Nations and Brooklyn Bridge and then the Statue of Liberty in the distance. We then traveled along Ambrose Light Channel out of NYC to Sandy
Hook, New Jersey.

Dering HBR, Shelter Island, NY 13 September 2008

Traveled from RI to Shelter Island inside the eastern end of Long Island. We have decided to head west down Long Island Sound because the weather is generally unsettled for the next few days. We will see the remnants of hurricane IKE Sunday night and Monday. With a front coming through we will probably stay over here for a couple of days.

FINALLY left Maine on Wednesday after many weather delays and arrived here at 5:00pm this afternoon. We are just east of Newport, RI by one island and 4 miles. More poor weather in the next few days, but we are hoping to move westward down Long Island Sound to NYC and then south bit by bit.

Boothbay Harbor, ME 4 September 2008

We have been in Boothbay for a few days. We were hoping to head to Cape Cod a couple of days ago, but Tropical Storm Hanna is interfering with our plans. Its track is up the East Coast and will be touching the Maine coast on Sunday. We have decided to wait it out here and spend the weekend in a slip tucked in a corner of the harbor under the protection of the hills surrounding the town.

We stayed on a mooring at a local marina, Wotton Wharf, for a couple of days and this was our neighbor on the dock. She is the 153 foot Sailing Vessel Antara. Is a part of a charter fleet. You and 8 of your friends can charter her for $150,000 per week. 12 of these boats are going to be in Boothbay for a race this coming weekend.

The next day the 125 foot Freedom arrived at the marina. Here she is backing into a spot on the dock behind Antara. The captain was demonstrating excellent seamanship in this maneuver as the winds were quite gusty.

We are waiting out the weather situation (weather here is really nice by the way) by doing lots of reading. The local library has one of the best used books stores that we have found in our cruising. We always make several visits while we are here. One their porch they give some of the books one last chance and offer them at the astonishing price of 10 cents a piece. We have found some really interesting books in this "collection".
