On Monday, we traveled 80 miles from Sandusky, Ohio to Fairport, Ohio which is about 30 miles east of Cleveland. It was a cloudy day with on and off showers. Since we were close to the shoreline, we did not see many lakefreighters. We passed one tug pushing a barge and several sail boats sailing to ports unknown. Fairport looks like an industrial town. As we entered the harbor, we saw the Morton Salt Mines to our port side and what looked like gravel pits and dockside cranes for loading lake freighters. There is also a Coast Guard Station here with several large "rescue boats" that are built like "army tanks". We saw many large sailing vesels in the boat yards in the harbor so this must be an "active sailing community". Tuesday, October 3rd, we hope to make Erie, PA- Presque Isle Harbor as we work our way east toward Buffalo, NY.
